Aenne M. Hansen, a 21 year resident of Abingdon, Virginia, died at her home on October 8, 2012. She moved to Abingdon from Highland Falls, New York where she resided with her late husband Ernst F. Hansen.

Mrs. Hansen is survived by her daughter, Heidi Hansen McElroy and her husband Howard C. McElroy of Abingdon; her daughter, Ingrid K. Hansen of Austin, Texas; her son, Joe Hansen and his wife Janis Hild Hansen of Liverpool, New York; five grandchildren: Karen McElroy Mason and her husband John Michael Mason of Christiansburg, Virginia, Christopher H. McElroy and fianc�©e Ashley Jerman of Richmond, Virginia and Missoula, Montana; Ingrid Michelle Hansen of Liverpool, New York; Laura Ann Hansen of Oakland, California, and 1LT Andrew P. McElroy of Landsthul, Germany. She is also survived by her great granddaughter, Caroline Jane Mason of Christiansburg, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews and their children.

Mrs. Hansen was born in Elberfeld Wuppertal, Germany on October 27, 1913 to Josef Malmedie and Margarete Lynen Malmedie. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers and sister, and most of her friends.

Mrs. Hansen was a business owner and a dressmaker. She started a women's retail clothing store, Fashions and Fabrics in Highland Falls, New York which she ran for 17 years before her retirement. She was trained in Germany as a professional dressmaker where she had a business. In New York State she taught dressmaking in the Adult Education Program of the Highland Falls School District. She enjoyed being a homemaker in Abingdon and working in her garden, sewing for her grandchildren, and going out to eat.

Mrs. Hansen's family is most grateful to the caregivers who lovingly attended Mrs. Hansen in the last years of her life: Bernice Moore, Becca Moore, Michelle Moore Carter, and Rebecca Lunsford. The family appreciates the care of Hometown Hospice, who together with her caregivers, allowed her to remain in her home.
There will be no burial service in accordance with her wishes the family of Mrs. Hansen requests no flowers. Memorials may be sent to the food bank of Washington County, The Barter Theater, or the charity of one's choice.
