Alice Bradley Porterfield, age 73, of Abingdon, Va., passed away at her home on Friday, March 9, 2018, after a brave and determined fight against cancer. She was surrounded by her family.
Alice was the daughter of the late Glen Wallace Bradley and Lucille Pickle Bradley. She was born on June 26, 1944, in Abingdon, Va. She was a graduate of Abingdon High School, and also attended Emory & Henry College. Alice was a member of Glade Spring Presbyterian Church where she served on numerous committees. She was an active volunteer in her community. In 2002, she was selected as Master Gardener of the Year. She was a true nature lover and never met a tree she didn’t like. Alice had a creative spirit, loved to decorate and create beauty. She loved writing poetry and especially children’s stories. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her generosity, her wonderful sense of humor, and her sustaining Christian faith. Her husband was the love of her life and her children and grandchildren were her life’s work.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Larry Wallace Bradley; and her sister, Dottie Bradley Davis.
She is survived by her husband O.M. “Sonny” Porterfield, Jr. of Abingdon; daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Bradley Porterfield of Baltimore, Md.; son, Stuart Miller Porterfield and wife, Kristin Thrift Porterfield, of Richmond, Va,; grandchildren, Caroline Scott Porterfield and Stuart Miller Porterfield, Jr. both of Richmond, Va.; sisters, Baja Bradley Conrad and husband, Ellison, of Abingdon and Mona Jo Bradley Hortenstine and husband, Joel, of Norcross, Ga.; brothers, Don L. Bradley and wife, Jenny, of Roanoke, Va. and Glen Michael “Mickey” Bradley and wife, Alice, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating Alice’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at the Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church, 33234 Lee Hwy., Glade Spring, VA 24340, with Rev. Tim Bird officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2018, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Alice’s memory be made to the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church Tree Project, P.O. Box 336, Glade Spring, VA 24340.
