Anna Jean Owens Altizer

Anna Jean Owens Altizer, age 90, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Monday, December 12, 2016, at Commonwealth Assisted Living. She was born to the late George Richard Owens and Pearl Artis Dodson Owens on June 23, 1926, in Oregon County, Mo. She was an active member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Verlin Grant Altizer; and four siblings.
She is survived by three sons: David Altizer and wife Carol of Tazewell, Va.; Mark Altizer of Abingdon, Va.; and Greg Altizer and wife Kim of Gastonia, N.C.; daughter, Nancy Altizer Cook and husband Buell of St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, Richard Owens and wife Sarah of Mountain Home, Ark. and Jon Alan Owens and wife Lorna of Albany, Ore.; sister, Mildred Wallace of Alton, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Riley Altizer, Leslie Altizer, Grant Cook, Kate Altizer, Corey Altizer, Amelia Altizer, and Alexis Altizer; two great grandchildren, Emily Coraline Cook and Grant Altizer; and a host of nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark B. McFadden officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jim Gardner, Dr. Paul Armstrong, Dr. F. Ellison Conrad, Dr. William Nuckols, Tyler Nuckols, Mike Hagy, and Fred Widner. A private committal service will be held in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens where entombment will follow.
