Arline Savannah Pope, age 97, of Abingdon, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 4, 2021, at her home. She was born in Marion, Ala. to the late Birdie Tarrant and Frances Billingsley Tarrant. Arline owned and operated Pope’s Grill for 40 years. Her business was considered a safe haven for students being bused to Douglas High School from surrounding areas before integration and was a gathering place for the community. Arline was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by, Granville Clayborn Pope, Sr.; and three sons, Granville Clayborn Pope, Jr.; Edward Pope; and Joseph Pope.
She is survived by two sons, Elder William Pace and wife, Ruth, of Atlanta, Ga. and George T. Pope of the home; daughter, Margaret “Fay” Jenkins of Birmingham, Ala.; 16 grandchildren; several great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant View United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barbara Farmer and Minister Margaret Jenkins officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Rd., Suite 106A, Roanoke, Va. 24018.
In accordance with Covid-19 restrictions, social distancing practices will be implemented, and face masks will be required for attendance.
