Arty "Nean" Neanola Moretz

Arty Neanola “Nean” Moretz, age 97, passed away, Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the Rehab Center at Bristol.  She was born in Ashe County, NC, and lived with her husband, John, in Baltimore, MD before settling in Washington County, Va. Nean was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Damascus, Va. She dedicated most of her life to creating a home for her husband and children. If you went to Nean’s house, you were expected to eat. She made the best sweet tea and baked the best coconut cake. She was known for her green thumb and for being a little farm hand. Her family remembers her as being a friend to all.

Arty was preceded in death by her husband John Moretz, son John Wayne Moretz, parents John L. and Addie Goodman Bowen. She was the last surviving sibling in her family.

She is survived by her sons Charles Howard Moretz of Abingdon and Joseph Eugene Moretz and Lynn of Meadowview, Va., her daughter Emma “Coleen” Raines of Abingdon, 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren, daughter-in-law, Jean Moretz, special sister-in-law, Molly Hortenstein, and special niece, Debbie Bowen and husband Mike.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, on Friday, February 3, 2023, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 2:30 on Saturday, February 4, 2023, with Pastors Anthony Milhorn and Lee Schenelle officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park where John, Justin, Sam and Chris Moretz, Kevin Campbell and Jimmy Turner will serve as pallbearers.
