Audrey H. Holmes Black, age 92, passed away Wednesday morning, May 2, 2012 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
She never met a stranger and always had a smile for everyone. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and grew up in the Poor Valley area. She was saved at Greendale United Methodist Church and graduated from Greendale High School. She worked at Cumbow China, Statzer Restaurant, and Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was born to the late Floyd A. and Emma Reynolds Holmes. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Lee Black; one daughter, Wanda Louise Black; and one granddaughter, Gina Lee Black; two sisters, Leota Brinkley and Pauline Henley; and three brothers, Gale Holmes, Kyle Holmes, and Ford Holmes.
She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Marie Baumgardner and husband Karlos Robert Baumgardner (who was like a son to her) of Abingdon, VA; two sons, Roger Lee Black and Laura Ellen Black of Konnarock, VA and Charles Edward Black of Abingdon, VA; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and four great great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a special grandson, Robbie Baumgardner, who always checked on her; and a special niece, Janice Price, who has always been faithful to her.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 4, 2012 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Interment to follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be David Black, Charles David (Boo) Black, Junior Henley, Mike Henley, Ernie Rosenbaum, Jonathan Shuttle, and Robbie Baumgardner.
