Mr. Benny Lee "Bud" Widener, age 79, went home to the Lord Jesus on Sunday, May 2, 2010. He was born in Roanoke, Virginia and had lived in southwest Virginia for all of his life. Mr. Widener was employed by the Town of Abingdon as a supervisor and heavy equipment operator for thirty-nine years. He served as a volunteer fireman for the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department for twenty-nine years. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Widener and Cora Lee Phillips Widener, and by a very special grandchild, Jarrod Lee Rasnake.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Betty A. Widener; by four daughters: Barbara A. Rodefur and husband Charles A. Rodefur of Abingdon, VA; Brenda K. Kendrick and Craig Kendrick of Meadowview, VA; Betty L. Deifenderfer and husband Mickey Deifenderfer of Leeds, AL; and Beverly J. Cook and husband Mark Cook of Prattville, AL; nine grandchildren: SFC Travis Rodefur, United States Army and wife Annette; Virginia A. Orfield and husband Mitchell; Adam C. Kendrick; Brett D. Kendrick; Clinton E. Kendrick and wife Mackenzie; Matthew Rasnake; Shannon Woltman; Seth A. Cook and wife Shanna; and Ethan T. Cook; one step-grandchild, Danny Deifenderfer and wife Angie; six great-grandchildren: Joshua, Alexis and Nicholas Orfield; Bentley Kendrick; Naomi Cook; and Austin Rodefur; two step-great-grandchildren: Audrey and Haylie Deifenderfer; seven brothers and sisters: Bill Widener, Mary Kaylor, J. W. Widener, Vivian Hutton, Allen Widener, Hattie Pickle, and Linda Widener.

A graveside service for Mr. "Bud" Widener will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Virginia, with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Those attending the service are invited to meet at the cemetery by 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department and employees of the Town of Abingdon.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department, 316 Park Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.

The family will receive friends at their residence.
