Betty Jo Carrier

March 18, 1939 — March 31, 2019

On Sunday, March 31, Betty Jo Carrier, loving wife and mother of two children, passed away at age 80.

Betty Jo was born on March 18, 1939 in Saltville, VA to Kate & Jim Scott.  On July 30, 1960, she married Edgar Lee “Buddy” Carrier in Bristol, TN and they were an inseparable, loving couple for over 58 years.  They raised one daughter, Tammy Jo Morelock (Carrier), who passed away April 16, 2004, and one son, Brian Lee Carrier.  Betty Jo was a loving grandmother to four grandchildren: Lauren Morelock, Joshua Carrier, Ellie Carrier, & Daniel Carrier. We draw strength knowing Betty Jo is with the Lord as she had a personal relationship and a decades long walk with the Lord where she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior as a teenager.

Betty Jo was a 1958 graduate of Tennessee High School, had a full scholarship for college, and retired after a long career with the Virginia Department of Forestry.  She was very active serving others and Christ for over 60 years at Abingdon Baptist Church and Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church. Usually, obituaries list all the accomplishments of someone by what the world measures of value – education, positions, work accomplishments, and more.  However, we would like to honor our dear wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend for how she lived her life to quietly honor and love her personal Lord and love and care for others.  Without fanfare, Betty Jo prayed for her children and grandchildren daily at the breakfast table, sent thousands of cards with caring personal notes to people, made ‘care’ baskets for the elderly, and quietly and humbly loved, served, and obeyed her heavenly Father and others behind the scenes.

Betty Jo truly lived out Proverbs 31 for what God honors in a woman:  A wife of noble character who can find?  She is worth far more than rubies.  Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.  She is clothed with strength and dignity.  Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.  Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who loves the Lord is to be praised.

Betty Jo is survived by her husband, Edgar Lee “Buddy” Carrier, son: Brian Lee Carrier and daughter-in-law, Colleen Carrier; son-in-law, Roy Morelock; grandchildren, Lauren Morelock, Joshua Carrier, Ellie Carrier, and Daniel Carrier; nephews & nieces, Jaime Scott, Walter Scott, Sam Scott, Robbie Scott, Mark Scott, Rusty Scott, Matt Slagle, Alison Slagle, Adam Blankenbeckler,  and Wes Blankenbeckler.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 6th at 9:30 am to 11:00 am at Abingdon Baptist Church, 361 W Main Street, Abingdon, VA.  The funeral service will be at 11:00 am at Abingdon Baptist Church followed by a committal service at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA.  Pastor Bill Bryan will officiate.
Pallbearers and honorary pall bearers include:  Daniel Carrier, Joshua Carrier, Roy Morelock, Jamie Scott, Sam Scott, Walter Scott, Mark Scott, Rusty Scott, and Tom Slagle.
