Mrs. Betty Lou Campbell passed away on April 7th in Valley Nursing Home in Chilhowie, Va. following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Campbell age 86, was born on March 30, 1931 to Dennis F. and Eula M. Norris in Watagua County, N.C.
Betty graduated from Liberty Hall High School and later attended Virginia Highlands Community College, Pikeville College and numerous art courses. She was a teacher’s aide and art instructor at Liberty Hall and Damascus schools. Throughout her life Betty was involved in arts and crafts as an artist and instructor.
Betty loved her church and was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church, and the Friendship WMU where she attended both for all her adult life. She was an avid gardener who was always interested in talking about growing vegetables and flowers alongside her husband, Jack. Betty especially loved and cherished her family whom she supported unconditionally, following grandchildren to every sporting event and function, continually staying in touch with brothers, sisters, and extended families.
In addition to her parents Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Meade “Jack” Campbell; one sister Mary Haga, Bedford Va.; brother, Burl Norris, Bristol Tenn.; and brother-in-law, Bob Rouse, Gainsville Ga. Also preceding are brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Mabel Campbell, Radford Va., Henry and Louise Campbell, Marion Va., Herbert Campbell, Marion, Va., and Bob and Helen Campbell, Abingdon Va.
Surviving are her daughter, Sharon Lou Campbell, West Jefferson, N.C.; two sons, Donald Meade Campbell, Jr. and wife Janet, Glade Spring, Va. and Dennis Wayne Campbell, Farmville, Va. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Dr. Justin Campbell, Gold Coast Australia, Rusty Campbell, Meadowview Va., Jenny Dorsey, Abingdon Va., Jack Dorsey, Abingdon Va., and Danielle Campbell, Abingdon Va.; her two great-grandchildren, Campbell Osborne and Alyssa Rose, both of Abingdon, Va. Additionally, sisters, Erma and husband Charles Reedy, Manassas, Va., Carolyn Rouse, Gainsville Ga., Dr. Martha Norris, Rural Retreat Va., Beverly Eason and husband Mark, Abingdon Va.; brother, Bill Norris and wife Wilma, Chesterfield, Va.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Moore of Meadowview, Va.; and her beloved nieces and nephews. Also foster sisters, Rachel Keller and Becky Goodman, that held a special place in Betty's heart.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. David Gary officiating. A committal service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to convene by 9:50 a.m. Wednesday at the cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.
