Beulah Jane Shelton Vannoy, age 75, beloved mother, sister, nurse, and friend, passed away peacefully the 18th day of February, 2014, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.
She was born in Bandy, VA on February 15, 1939, to the late William James and Roxie Caroline Shelton, and was preceded in death by her loving son, Timothy Brian "Bubba" Vannoy and her sisters Alice Marie Keefer of Rittman, OH, and Ruth Josephine Shelton of Chilhowie, VA.
Beulah was a long-serving employee of Smyth County Community Hospital, delivering or assisting in the labor/delivery of "over half" (in her estimation) of Smyth County. She was of the Baptist faith and was a founding member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Meadowview, VA.
Her home was consistently filled with the laughter of her sons, their friends, and her family, most likely because of the unashamedly embellished stories she loved to tell. Worn-out tales of Old Mose, hoop snakes, The Watermelon Thief, or The Boy Born with No Eye-lids live on as long as they are shared by her beloved nieces and nephews.
Beulah is survived by her son, Gregory Wayne Vannoy of Meadowview, VA; her brothers, William Bud Shelton and wife, Martha, of Chilhowie, VA; James Franklin Shelton and wife, Bonnie, of Riverview, FL; and Edward Lee Shelton and wife, Elaine, of Abingdon, VA; her sisters, Velma Sue Latham Wymer and husband, Johnny, of Abingdon, VA; Carol McVeigh Belefski and husband, Mark, of Charles Town, WV; and Elizabeth Frances Blevins and husband, Rick, of Saltville, VA, special friend Marion Katherine "Sis" Dean Lamie; several nieces and nephews, and her faithful yellow lab, Rusty, who diligently lay at her door each morning (mostly because she snuck and fed him bacon around that time).
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday February 21, 2014, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon, VA. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Rick Vannoy officiating.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Smyth County Ambulance Service, most notably Charlie Hall and Robert Taylor, and also to the staffs of Johnston Memorial Hospital, Smyth County Community Hospital, Valley Health Care, and Hospice of Southwest Virginia for their continued diligence.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Beulah Vannoy Memorial Fund, 29396 Lanier Dr., Meadowview, VA 24361.
