Abingdon, VA Billy Ashford Witt, age 90, formerly of Grundy, VA, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Bill was born on October 5, 1923, in Bramwell, WV to the late Frank and Lydia Witt. Bill was a WWII veteran and served in England, France, Germany, and Belgium. After serving his country, he moved to Grundy. While living in Grundy, he was a salesperson for Betsy Ross Bakery. He was an active member of the Grundy Church of Christ. He was also an active member of the Grundy Athletics Boosters and an enthusiast of little league sports. This led to a lifetime involvement of supporting not only his children, but also his grandchildren in sports and school activities. Bill was a lifetime active member of the American Legion and a member of the Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge #17 in Grundy. Bill moved to Abingdon in 1978. He then joined First Christian Church where he served as treasurer for several years. Bill loved the game of golf and was a devoted member and supporter of Glenrochie Country Club where he was recently named an Honorary Lifetime member. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Helen. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Henry S. Mullins, Jr., three sisters, and one brother. Those left to cherish his memory include his three children: daughter, Teresa Witt Mullins; two sons, A.D. Witt and his wife Nancy, and Billy J. Witt and his wife Sherry. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Henry Stuart Mullins, III, Margaux Fields, Robin Harrell, Allison Price, Dustin Mullins, Morgan Mullins, Zachary Witt and Caroline Witt. His great-grandchildren are Autumn Fields, Luke Harrell, Ashley Harrell, Boone Fields, Audrey Mullins, and Harper Witt. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A celebration of his amazingly long life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday following the visitation with Minister Tom Crise officiating. Pallbearers will be James Johnson, Eddie Rainey, Don Adams, Emory Wright, Ron Snowden, Alex Gibson, Ben Abel, Palmer Dotson, Prentis Hallenbeck, and David Hurst. Masonic Rites will be courtesy of the Abingdon Lodge #48 and military rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. Entombment at the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens will be private. Please honor Mr. Witt with donations to the American Red Cross, 14298, Lee Highway, Bristol, VA 24202.
