Billy Jack Hackney, age 74, passed away at his home on Monday, July 22, 2013. He was a member and elder of the First Christian Church of Abingdon. Mr. Hackney was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Gladys Ramey Hackney.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Millie Mullins Hackney; daughter, Tammy (Terry) Johnson of Gallipolis, OH; two sons, Michael (Tammy) Hackney of Bristol, VA and Doc (Vickie) Wilson of Wilmington, NC; two grandsons, Michael Hackney and John Addison; two granddaughters, Tabitha Smith and Lynsey Wilson; three step-grandsons, Matthew Widner, Schaad Johnson and Trenton Johnson; great-granddaughter, Lydia Smith; brother, George Hackney; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at First Christian Church of Abingdon. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 7:00 p.m. with Minister Howard Taylor and Minister Tom Crise officiating.
A committal service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Ervin Stiltner, Howard Poe, Johnny Boyd, Mike Howard, Ron Proffitt, and J.C. Anderson serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be John Jones and Ron Snowden. Family and friends who wish to attend the committal service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 11:00 a.m. Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Hometown Hospice for the care they gave. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Christian Church of Abingdon in Mr. Hackney's name.
