Abingdon, VA – Bobby Herman “Bob” Bumgarner, age 78, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2015, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was the youngest of nine children born to the late Dave Bumgarner and Ida Eldridge Bumgarner on June 11, 1937. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and retired from the Abingdon Police Department after 36 years of service. In addition to his parents, Bob was also preceded in death his son, Michael Bumgarner; three brothers, Jack, Johnny, and Billy Bumgarner; four sisters, Essie Bumgarner, Faye Taylor, Nettie Hart, and Betty Lowe; and grandson, Brett Akers. He is survived by his wife, Lola Belle Tibbs Bumgarner; son, Gary Akers and wife Jane Caldwell of Abingdon, VA; sister, Ruth Widener of Knoxville, TN; grandson, Alex Akers of Houston, TX; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral ceremony will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 30th at the funeral home with the Rev. David St. Clair officiating. Friends and family will meet at the McClure Cemetery in Chilhowie for a committal service at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday where pallbearers will be selected from nephews and great nephews. Members of the Abingdon Police Department will serve as honorary pallbearers. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force.
