Bonnie Ann Cunningham

July 12, 1928 — June 19, 2018

Bonnie Ann Cunningham, 89, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Bonnie was an Abingdon native and was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church. She was a kind and gracious person, and she was always looking for ways to do things for her family and to be a peacemaker. Bonnie loved children, especially her great-grandbabies. This love was demonstrated by her career in the Washington County, Va. School System, from which she retired. Following retirement, she continued working with children as a sitter at the Washington County Rec Center. The children there affectionately called her “Miss Bonnie.” Bonnie was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed working with hand crafts.

Bonnie was predeceased by her parents, Tom Maiden and Lucille Garvey Maiden; and sister, Dorothy “Dot” Stoe.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Millard Cunningham; daughter, Teresa Ornduff, and son by marriage, Rick, of Abingdon, Va.; granddaughter, Ashley Monk and husband, Brandon, of Roanoke, Va.; great-grandchildren, Mason and Samantha Bell Monk, and a new arrival due in July; brothers, Harry Maiden of Florence, Ala. and Wayne Maiden of Chattanooga, Tenn.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 21, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. Entombment will be in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org or at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

The family would like to offer sincere and heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at the PCU, 3rd floor, Johnston Memorial Hospital, and especially Dr. James Shauberger for the love and care that they showed them and Bonnie.
