Boyd Byron Cassell, age 88, of Mechanicsville, Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
A proud son of Russell County, Boyd moved to Richmond in the early 1970s to serve VDOT’s environmental division. Throughout his decades-long career, he championed highway beautification across the Commonwealth. His love of natural beauty was reflected in everything from his immaculate lawn to his deep appreciation for the mountains of Southwest Virginia. An avid sportsman, he especially enjoyed hunting game birds.
Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Clint and Mary B. Cassell; wife, Billie Cassell; daughter, Karen Hoard; and sisters, Jean and Thelma Cassell, Nell Hartsock, and Betty Daugherty.
Mr. Cassell is survived by his son, Donald Cassell; son-in-law, Larry Hoard; three grandsons, Michael (Elga Ozols) Hoard, Johnathan (Megan) Hoard, and Russell Cassell; granddaughter, Sammy Jo Cassell; two great-grandsons, James and Henry Hoard; sister, Ann Cassell; brother-in-law, Eddie Daugherty; and many special nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 17 from 1:00 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. at Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A graveside service will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating.
