Carl Findlay McCauley, Jr.

Bristol, VA - Carl Findlay McCauley Jr, age 86, died June 1, 2016 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born March 10, 1930 in Abingdon VA to the late Findlay and Lucille Smith McCauley. Carl graduated from Cleveland High School and Washington County Technical School. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean War with a two and half year duty in Japan. He traveled much of the island of Japan including Hiroshima, Nagasaki and climbed Mt Fuji. He met and became friends with a Christian missionary couple from Seattle with whom he helped build a church in Mizuho, Japan.
Carl worked as a structural steel draftsman at Bristol Steel and Iron Works and Southern Engineering for 43 years, retiring in 1992. He was a life long member of Green Spring Presbyterian Church serving as a deacon, elder, Sunday School treasurer and church trustee. He also served on the Board of Directors at the Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands, in Wytheville, VA.
In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Hayden McCauley and a great-grandson, Bryson.
He is survived by one son, Kevin McCauley, of Bristol, VA; two daughters, Cathy McCauley of Charlotte NC and Cindy (Scott Hummel) McCauley of Greensboro NC; three grandchildren, Crystal, Kevin Thomas, and Ashley; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Conley McCauley and wife Janet of Kingsport, TN.The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Green Spring Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jon Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Air Force.
