Carl R. "Bud" Gentry

Carl R. “Bud” Gentry, age 78, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at his home.

He was born in Baldwin, N.C. on September 2, 1938, to the late Hill Gentry and Doris Houck Gentry and is survived by his wife, Janice Potter Gentry; brother, Bobby (Barbara) Gentry of Abingdon; sister, Jane Gentry (Zane) Pierce of Abingdon. He was a loving father and grandfather to his daughters, Chloe Gentry Schreiber and husband Thomas of Palm Harbor, Fla. and Sharon Gayle Gentry of Abingdon; three step-children, Johnny Wardle, Tim (Donna) Hale, and Melanie (Tommy) Trinkle; five grandchildren, Henry Schreiber, Holly Schreiber, Bradley (Naiana) Hale, Jennifer (Caleb) Hensley, and Caroline (David Cannon) Sword; three great grandchildren, Annabelle Cannnon, Maverick Cannnon, and Rory Hensley; two step grandchildren, David Motley and Kasey Redmond; several nieces; canine companion, Flossie Mae; and special friends include, Carl Sampson, H.C. “Footsie” Pratt, John Garrett, Leon and Debbie Vandyke, David Harmon, and Jerry Houck.

He attended and graduated from Blountville High School. Afterward he joined the United States Airforce. Carl later co-owned various building supply stores and ended his career owning Abingdon Precast Products with his brother. Carl belonged to Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48. He was a well-known contributor to anyone in need and attended Greendale Chapel. Carl loved to travel in his RV.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2017, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral ceremony will follow the visitation at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. A committal service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery, 495 Hwy. 194 S., West Jefferson, N.C. 28694, with the Rev. Tim Rhoten officiating. Henry Schreiber, Bradley Hale, Johnny Wardle, Caleb Hensley, David Motley, and David Harmon will serve as pallbearers. Bryce Lewis, Garnett Mann, Zane Pierce, and Don Houck will serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 519 N.C. Hwy., West Jefferson, N.C. 28694, or Greendale Chapel, P.O. Box 1314, Abingdon, Va. 24212.
