Carmen Mae Nunley

Abingdon

Abingdon, VA - Carmen Mae Nunley passed away peacefully on January 14th, 2024, at her home in Washington County, Virginia weeks before her 105th birthday. She was born February 6th, 1919, in Washington County, VA to the late Jerry and Gladys Pendleton. She was preceded in death by her husband James Martin Nunley, along with brother J.S. “Shine” Pendleton and sister Elaine Gobble. She was also preceded in death by her foster son Sammy Rosenbaum.

Carmen graduated from Greendale High School and went on to teach for many years at Benham Head Start Center in Bristol, VA. Many of her students still speak of the influence she had in their lives. She was a dedicated Christian and was the oldest member of the Chestnut Grove Community Church where she sang in the choir for many years.

Carmen is survived by her two sons, Kenneth (Susan) Nunley and Gary (Pat) Nunley, both of Abingdon, VA. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Kent (Natasha) Nunley and Katie (Shawn) Dupuie of Abingdon, VA. Also surviving is her niece, Linda Pendleton of Abingdon, VA.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2024, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Bro. Shawn Dupuie officiating.  A private interment will be held in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.  Pallbearers will be Kent Nunley, Kenneth “Bid” Taylor, Terry Breedlove, Wade Nunley, Ronnie Nunley, Aaron Taylor, and Shawn Dupuie.  Honorary pallbearers will be members of Chestnut Grove Community Church.

Special appreciation is extended to all of Carmen’s caretakers including Mary Ray, Kristi White, Jazmane Peters, Ann Smith, Mary Blankenship, and Myra Osborne. The family would like to give special thanks to Kenneth “Bid” Taylor and Wanda Taylor for the love and support they have always given Carmen and her family.
