Abingdon, Va. – Caroline K. Spires, age 90, passed away at her home on Tuesday, May 22, 2018.
Caroline was born on June 22, 1927 in Hazleton, Pa., and was raised in Pottsville, Pa. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University where she met her husband, Ed. After receiving her degree, she worked for the Heinz Corporation in Pittsburgh. Caroline and her family moved to the area in 1971 where Ed was employed at Westinghouse. In retirement, she and Ed traveled abroad extensively. Caroline thoroughly enjoyed life in Abingdon, especially her outings to the Barter Theatre and the good times she had with her bridge groups.
Caroline was predeceased by her husband, Edward T. Spires, Jr.; parents, Philip and Emily Knobloch; sisters and their husbands, Patricia K. Jones and husband, William L., and Emily M. Zacko and husband, William E.; and sister-in-law, Sara E. Spires.
She is survived by her three sons; Eric Spires and wife, Denise of Columbus, Ohio, Steven Spires and wife, Karen of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and Mark Spires of Abingdon; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Caroline was much loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. According to her wishes, no services are planned.
