Charles Kenneth Hughes

Abingdon, VA – Charles Kenneth Hughes, age 77, passed on Saturday, November 29, 2014, at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, VA. Kenneth spent his childhood in Russell County, VA before moving to Abingdon. He was an employee of Columbus-McKinnon in Damascus, VA for 42 years and was a United Steel Worker. Kenneth was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a member of Washington Chapel United Methodist Church. He loved his children, grandchildren, gardening, and his flowers. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Ashton Hughes and Mary Fannie Keith Hughes; his wife, Shelby Louise Lasley Hughes; and one brother, Ralph Allen Hughes. He is survived by his children, Charles Kenneth “Chuck” Hughes and wife Tina Lynn Williams Hughes of Summerville, SC, and Ruth Anne Hughes Wirt of Abingdon, VA; two brothers, James Dwight “J.D.” Hughes and wife Rhondora of Los Angeles, CA, and Larry Elliott Hughes and wife Wanda of Lebanon, VA; one sister, Clara Mae Hughes Mabe and husband Robert Lee of Meadowview, VA; and four grandchildren, Suzanne Wirt, Charlie Hughes, Andy Wirt, and Quinton Hughes. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, November 30, 2014, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Larry Lusk officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 5-7 just prior to the service. A committal service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, at the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Air Force.
