C.W. Harris, Jr., 88, a beloved father and grandfather, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, March 31, 2019. One of his favorite places to be was in his rocking chair with family all around, his cat, Boots, on his lap, and Molly B’s Polka Party on the television. C.W., a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, made his living buying cattle for Valleydale for over 30 years and raising his own cattle on Long View Farm. He enjoyed giving back to the community through service to the Abingdon United Methodist Church, Civitan Club, Farm Bureau, Barter Theatre, and Washington County Fair Committee. C.W. was also an honored member of the Virginia Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services from 1997-2001, the Farm Service Agency County Executive Committee, and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Suzanne Marie Harris; brother, Lewis Harris, and sisters, Ruby Vestal and Stella Price. C. W. is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marie; daughter, Terri Shifflett and husband, Alvin of Oilville, Va.; son, Allen Harris of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Tiffany Jenkins and husband Scott, Wesley Shifflett, Abby Harris, Sabrina Shifflett, and Maggie Harris; great-grandchildren, Teague, Tori, Olivia and Finn Jenkins; sisters Lorena Bolling (Bobby), Margaret Ann Harris, and Mary Whitley (Bob); and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Abingdon United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 4 at Abingdon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clarence Dishman and Dr. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park where pallbearers will be Kevin Beale, Frank Blair, Michael Cox, Dick Gail, Jimmy Harris, Scott Jenkins, Charlie Quillin, John Preston Seymore, and Wesley Shifflett. Honorary pallbearers are Harry Cuskey, Jim Gardner, Bob Preston, the members of Wesley Bible class, and his McDonald’s friends. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.
