Mr. Charlie H. Whaley, a resident of Mendota, Virginia for 27 years went to be with the Lord and Savior on October 4, 2009 at his home with his wife and granddaughters at his side.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was also a former member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Betty Joe Widener Whaley; one son, Charles Andrew Whaley and wife, Sharon of Portland, TN; one daughter, Charlotte Helbert and husband, Trey of Hiltons, VA; two granddaughters, Hannah and Hattie Helbert, who were his pride and joy; one grandson, Zachary Helbert; two more grandchildren, Nikki and John Bowser and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by six sisters, Violet Brewer, Mary Martin, and Ola Denton all of Bristol, VA, Jo Mutter of Abingdon, Jenny Jones and Rebecca Cyrus of Meadow Bridge, WV.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dexter Terry officiating. Entombment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum in Abingdon. Pallbearers will be Tom Hemmings, Sherman Pippin, Hunter Harrison, Mike McMurray, Harold Fleenor and Corey Gibson. Highlands Fellowship Veteran's Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery. The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday.
