Clara Bailey Wise

Abingdon, Va.

Clara Bailey Wise, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 in Viviant Healthcare of Bristol. She was born in Dickenson County, Va.; however, she spent much of her life in the Abingdon area. Clara and her husband Tom owned and operated Wise’s Grocery in the Green Spring area of Washington County for many years. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church on Mock Knob Road. Clara and Tom were active members of the Appalachian Trail Club and participated in constructing many of the shelters on The Trail in her area. She was an avid quilter and did so with the help of Tom.

Clara was predeceased by her husband Thomas, parents Cummings and Margie Kiser Bailey, daughter Jackie Slagle and granddaughter Mary Beth.

She is survived by her daughter Sharon Gail Toney, son-in-law Ted Slagle, brother Larry Bailey, sisters Judy “Midge” Salyers, Jo Ellen Dotson, and Ruby McDowell.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 12, 2022, at the Parkway Baptist Worship Center, 1253 Volunteer Pkwy, Bristol, TN 37620. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until the time for the service. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 1019 Valley Dr., Bristol, Va.
