Abingdon, Va. - Conrad Tate Kendall Sutherland, age 87, passed away on November 4, 2021 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. Conrad was born in Nancy, Virginia on May 28, 1934. He was the second of four children born to the late Edgar and Chloe Compton Sutherland.
In addition to his parents, Conrad was preceded in death by his brother, Lance.
He is survived by his sister, Jill Beverly; brother, Dana Sutherland (Rose); and nephews Blake Beverly-Father Neilos, Rodney Beverly (Auli), Russell Sutherland (Lori), Jamie Sutherland (Erin), Jason Sutherland (Yoko), and Darrin Sutherland (Ruth). He is also survived by his friend, Brenda Swindall; and his special caregiver, Molly Collin.
Conrad graduated from East Tennessee State University and taught English at Clintwood High School in the early 1960s, before moving to Northern Virginia, where he worked for the United States Department of the Navy, Melpar, and Exxon. About 1988, Conrad moved to Abingdon, Virginia, a town that he dearly loved, and began working at the Barter Theatre.
Conrad chose to be cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date to be announced. His cremated remains will be scattered in the Couger Sutherland Family Cemetery at Nancy, Virginia.
Conrad loved the Barter, attended every show, and he was always looking forward to the next show. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Barter Theatre, P O Box 867, Abingdon, VA 24212.
