Abingdon, VA - Cornelia “Connie” Hagy Counts passed away after declining health at her home in Abingdon, Virginia on December 5, 2021. She was born October 16, 1933 and was 88 years old at the time of her death. Connie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Thomas “Tom” A. Counts, her father Ralph Huddle Hagy, mother Helen Mongle Hagy, and brother Richard Mongle Hagy.
She was a devoted mother to the following surviving children: Thomas A. Counts, II of Roanoke, VA, Teresa Halsey and husband Chris of Abingdon, VA, Daphne Marcinek and husband Michael of Monroe, CT, and Tina Counts of Bristol, VA.; six grandchildren of whom she was very proud: Ryan Halsey and wife Katie, Reid Halsey and fiancé Brooke, Justin Marcinek, Ashley Marcinek, Cameron Parish and Connor Parish.
Born in Greendale, VA, Connie graduated from Greendale High School in 1950. She was a Registered nurse and graduated from Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. Connie was there as a head nurse, clinical supervisor and instructor to students until the 3-year program was discontinued. She then acquired her insurance license and worked in the office of her husband, who was an agent for State Farm Insurance in Abingdon VA. They retired together on November 30, 2005.
In her life, Connie was devoted to caring for elderly family members. She was secretary of the Bristol Jaycettes and helped to start the Watauga Chapel Summer Singing Services where she was treasurer from 1998 to 2017. She was a member of Green Spring Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. As a cancer survivor, during her retirement she volunteered in the Johnston Memorial Hospital Cancer Center Resource Room. Connie was a gifted piano player and enjoyed playing for her guests.
The services for Connie Counts will begin with visitation from 12:00-1:00, followed by a funeral service from 1:00-2:00 on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at Green Spring Presbyterian Church, 22007 Green Springs Church Rd, Abingdon, VA with Pastor Robby Coggins and Rev. Bob Neace officiating. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Michael Marcinek, Chris Halsey, Reid Halsey, Jason Dunn, Jamae Blevins and Matt Smith. Honorary pallbearers, affectionately known as “Connie’s Angels”, will be Carol White, Kathy Neace, Flo Porter, Kailey Cassario, Karen Coggins, Carolyn Willis, and Bette Landis.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorial contributions be made to METAvivor (Metastatic Breast Cancer research) at METAvivor Research and Support Inc., 1783 Forest Drive #184, Annapolis, MD 21401 (donate.metavivor.org) or St Judes Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (stjude.org). These two charities use 100% of donated money for patient research and care.
