Roanoke, Va. – Daisy Burke Campbell, 93, passed away due to complications from Covid-19 on January 21, 2021.
Daisy graduated from William King High School on May 31, 1945, received her B.A. from Radford College, and advanced degrees from East Tennessee State University and Virginia Tech.
She taught at Pulaski, Lebanon, and Richlands high schools. She was Administrator of Adult Basic Education in Russell County, Virginia, and had a lifelong interest in adult literacy. One of the original faculty of Southwest Virginia Community College, she taught there as an English professor for 23 years. At SWCC, Daisy was Vice President and President (twice) of the faculty senate and served on several committees.
In 1987, she received the Virginia State Council of Higher Education’s Outstanding Faculty Award.
Daisy served on the Lebanon Town Council for two terms. She also held local, district, and conference positions in the United Methodist Church, sang in the choir, and taught adult Sunday School classes.
Daisy was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Sara Willis Burke; her siblings, Joe W. “Buddy” Burke, Louise Jones, and Christine Hardwick; and her husband, Billy James Campbell.
She is survived by her sons, Randall Campbell and his wife Rebecca, and Tony Dodi and his wife Gloria; as well as grandchildren, Anne Campbell, Kaitlin Monk, Emily Carter, and Jacob Campbell; and seven great-grandchildren.
