Daniel C. Ball

Abingdon, VA Daniel C. “Dan” Ball, age 80, passed on Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Dan was born in Raven, VA to the late James Clayton Ball and Joe Ella Boyd and grew up in Pine Creek, VA. After graduating high school, he served in the U.S. Army. Dan lived in Coeburn, VA for many years where he served as the Wise County Commissioner of Revenue for 24 years and was a 50 year member of Coeburn Lodge 97 A.F. & A.M. He moved to Abingdon in 1988 and became an elder at Spring Creek Presbyterian Church. Dan served on the Board of Directors for Washington County Social Services, the Bank of America, and Appalachian Insurance. Dan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cleo Brooks Ball; son, Rocky Ball of Abingdon, VA; aunts, Alice Plaster of Ohio and Pauline Tuminello of Maryland; uncle, James M. Boyd of Richmond, VA; special nephew, Brian Lawson; special cousin, Nancy Wilson, with whom he grew up; and several additional nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services for Dan Ball will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Stephen Talbert officiating. Masonic Rites will be performed by Coeburn Lodge 97 A.F. & A.M. Visitation with the family will be held at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., just prior to the service. A committal service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Richard Hayes, Reed Hayes, D. Carrier, Josh Provett, Drew DeForge, and Gary DeForge serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Stevens, Ralph Keene, Barton Roark, and Dan’s walking friends at the Bristol Mall. Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. Those wishing to attend the committal are asked to convene at the cemetery by 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Ball’s name to Spring Creek Presbyterian Church, 19179 Mercedes Dr., Abingdon, VA 24210.
