David C. Fortner, 83, passed away on June 23, 2010 in Bristol Nursing Home.

He was born to Mamie Estep Fortner and Rhudy A. Fortner on March 15, 1927, in Elizabethton, TN. He served in the United States Navy in World War II. He was employed at Larken Bakery in Elizabethton and Kerns Bakery in Bristol, VA. He was a former member of the Eastside Christian Church in Elizabethton and West Hills Christian Church in Bristol. After moving to Washington County, VA he became a member of the Shakesville Church of Christ where he was an Elder, Sunday school teacher, and a member of the choir.David was a volunteer at Bristol Nursing Home where he taught a weekly Bible study class for 30 years.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Anna Mae Fortner; a sister Nora Irene Shurling; brothers, Loyd, Worley and James Fortner; an infant grandson and a great grandson, Lucas Snodgrass.

Survivors include a son, David E. Fortner and wife Fran of Abingdon, VA; two daughters, Connie Collins and husband Joe of Apex, NC and Janet Burnette of Bristol, VA; six granddaughters, Keressa Clark and husband Tony of Bristol, VA, Rebecca Price and husband Michael, Amanda Snodgrass and husband Brandon, all of Abingdon, VA, Suzanne Necessary and husband Jeff of South Carolina, Jennifer Parker and husband Chris of Raleigh, NC and Amy Crabtree and husband Bobby of Rougemont, NC; nine great grand children; two sisters, Fannie Mae Gosnell and Glenda Rhea Hall; three brothers, Charles B. Fortner, Ernie Fortner and Larry Glenn Fortner.

Funeral services for Mr. Fortner will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2010, at Shakesville Church of Christ, 2662 King Mill Pike, Bristol, VA with Minister John Owens officiating. Entombment will follow in Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Military honors will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be grandsons-in-law and nephew Jimmy Hendley. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Shakesville Church of Christ and the staff of Bristol Nursing Home.

The family will receive friends at Shakesville Church of Christ one hour prior to the service on Sunday.

In lieu of flowers Mr. Fortner asked that donations be made to Shakesville Church of Christ, 2662 King Mill Pike, Bristol, VA 24201.
