David Leroy Lowe, age 68, of Abingdon, Va., went to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at Johnston Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. Leroy was born in Abingdon to the late Robert Lowe and Virginia Dedo Lowe. He retired from Xerox after 35 years of service, and worked for Hungate Business Solutions until the onset of his cancer. He attended Abingdon Bible Church for 31 years, and volunteered for Abingdon Midget League Football for over 15 years. Leroy was a member of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years and served as Firefighter/Engineer and received the Fireman of the Year award in 2014.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Jim and Irene Odum.
Leroy leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Kathy Odum Lowe; son, David “Roho” Lowe and wife, Kim, of Blacksburg, Va.; daughters, Amy Chapman and husband, Tom, and Ashley Hembree and husband Drew, all of Abingdon, Va.; five grandchildren, Ali Lowe, Abby Lawson, Amanda Lowe, and Addison and Jack Hembree; three step-grandsons, Bryce, Dalton, and Aiden Chapman; three sisters, Jayne (Daniel) Benge of King, N.C., Marie Alexander of Martinsville, Va., and Glenna (John) Gibson of Jeffersonville, Ind.; three brothers, Bob (Bobbi) Lowe of Blacksburg, Va., Leighton (Kathi) Lowe and Billy (Lynn) Lowe, all of Abingdon, Va. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, August 28, 2017, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Steve Vaughan, Dr. Paul Bufford, and David Lowe, M.Div. officiating. Entombment will follow in the Serenity Garden Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens where Timmy Arnold, Dennis Blaylock, James “Beau” Briscoe, Crow Clark, Alan Combs, Dewey Hope, and Tommy Sproles will serve as pallbearers. Mark Barrett, Frank Blair, Dwight Crane, and the past and present members of Abingdon Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 27, 2017, at the Main Street Chapel.
