Dewey "Shorty" Whitehead, 95, passed away Monday, November 16, 2009 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 21, 1914 in Carter Co., TN and was a son of the late Lloyd and Hedi Ward Whitehead. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cleatis Mitchell Whitehead and one grandson, Kenneth Roger Whitehead.
Survivors are his children, Patsy McVey and husband, Dan of Meadowview, Judy Davis of Abingdon, Don Whitehead and wife, Wilma of Abingdon, Ruby Diane Whitehead of Meadowview, Scotty Whitehead and wife, Peggy of Abingdon, Dewey Kenneth Whitehead and wife, Katherine of Abingdon and Brenda Alexander and husband, June of Abingdon; twelve grandchildren; twenty three great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two sisters, Linda Hughes of Hampton, TN and Georgia Darnell of Kingsport, TN as well as several other family members and friends.
The family would also like to especially thank all the 4th floor nurses and staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens on Lee Highway in Abingdon with Rev. Roger O'Quinn officiating.
Pallbearers will be Raymond Warren, Glenn Mitchell, Justin Whitehead, Michael Whitehead, Daniel Whitehead and Ricky McVey. Honorary Pallbearers will be friends and neighbors.
Highlands Fellowship Veteran's Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
Those wishing to go in procession to the cemetery are asked to meet at Farris Funeral Service by 10:30 A.M. Wednesday.
The family will be receiving friends at Farris Funeral Service from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday.
