Dorothy Mae Street

d. December 27, 2014

Abingdon, VA Mrs. Dorothy Mae Fletcher Street, age 87, passed away at her home on Saturday, December 27, 2014. Mrs. Street was a native of Buchanan County, VA, and had lived in Abingdon for the past 37 years. Mae was a housewife and never worked outside the home. Her primary purpose in life was to care for her home and family, and she never deviated from that mission. She unselfishly and without complaint devoted her life to caring for her home and family. She was a member of the Trigg Street Church of God where she enjoyed volunteering her time to work. She additionally loved gardening, quilting and canning. While she was able, “nothing ever went to waste.” Mae was predeceased by her parents, Toy Evans and Rosie Ann Fletcher; brothers Claude, Ervin, Donald and Everett Fletcher; sisters Gay Presley, Francis Shortridge, Orphie Arwood and Emma Lambert. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Charlie Evans Street; daughters Brenda and Betty Jo Street, both of Abingdon; sister Fayrene Wampler of Davenport, VA; special niece and daughter of her heart, Patti Mumpower of Bristol, VA; sister-in-law Ellen Fletcher of Rowe, VA; and devoted companion Meggan. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Monday, December 29, 2014 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday December 30, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Steve Vaughn officiating. Entombment will follow in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens Colonial Mausoleum. Casket bearers will be Jack McClanahan, Edsel Phelps, Talbert White, Gene Robinson, Fred Roberts and Bobby Inscore. Honorary bearers will be special nephew Mike Fletcher, Danny Mumpower and Harold McClanahan. The family sends its love and gratitude to Carol Coleman for her love and devotion in caring for “Miss Mae” for over two years. They also send a special thank you to Sheila Gamble for her nightly vigil and loving comfort during their Mother’s journey home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Trigg Street Church of God Building Fund, 335 Trigg Street, Abingdon, VA24210, or the Highlands Fellowship Food Pantry, 22417 Watauga Road, Abingdon, VA 24211.
