Dot Neal "D.N." Henderson

Abingdon, VA

D.N. Henderson, well respected and admired farmer, husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in the Lindell community of Washington County, on March 20, 2023.  Mr. Henderson had experienced a brief illness prior to his death.  He was 96 years old.

He is survived by his son, Eddie Henderson (Sherrie Arrants), his granddaughter, Melissa Henderson and grandson Bryan Henderson (Mary Rachel).  He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Brenda Henderson and Lorene McCray and brother-in-law Kenneth Davenport (Shirley) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

D.N. was preceded in death by his devoted wife of over fifty years, Christina Davenport Henderson. He was also the last remaining of eight siblings; he was pre-deceased by brothers D.P. Henderson, Herschel Henderson and Joy Henderson and sisters Helen Sillix, Margaret Williams, Zane Litton and Betty Jane Henderson.

After serving in the U.S. Army in Europe after WWII, D.N. returned to Lindell to have a family and build a life as a hardworking farmer. Those who knew him knew he loved living and working on the land just a few miles from where he grew up; he was happiest behind the wheel of his tractor mowing hay.  His family also fondly remember how he loved a good practical joke. In his later years, he loved to sit on the back porch to receive visitors and look out over the hills watching the cattle with his faithful canine companion, Buddy.

D.N. was also a lifelong member of the Lindell Church of Christ.  Following church services, he always enjoyed a big Sunday dinner with family. He will be missed by his friends, family, and all of those who knew him in the community.

The family would like to thank caregiver Mrs. Kathy Jones for her dedication and care for D.N.  She has been extremely helpful and compassionate in his time of need.

The funeral for Mr. Henderson will be held at the Forest Hills Chapel, 19451 Lee Highway, Abingdon at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 23rd.  The Rev. Johnny Farmer will be conducting the service.  Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.  Pallbearers will include Larry Sillix, Jerry Williams, Shawn Henderson, Kenneth Davenport, Jamie Henderson and Mark Henderson. Honorary pallbearers will include Phil Henderson, Justin Sillix, Michael McCray, Dale Williams, Tim Henderson, Dean Henderson and Garry Litton. The family will receive visitors prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m. (EST).
