Dr. Dorris Alvin Cunningham

Dr. Dorris Alvin Cunningham, age 92, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at his home. He was born to the late Robert Calvin Cunningham and Cora Alice Gregory Cunningham in Lee County, VA on October 12, 1922. Dr. Cunningham was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He was a member of the American Medical Association and a Diplomate of the American College of Radiology. Having served in WWII and the Korean War, he was a veteran of the United States Army. Dr. Cunningham was employed as a radiologist with Clinch Valley Clinic in Richlands for 30 years before retiring to Abingdon. While in Richlands, he was a charter member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. He was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for many years. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Newlin B. Cunningham; and sister, Lucille Brewer. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Elizabeth Rollins Cunningham; son, David Cunningham and wife Tina of Christiansburg, VA; two daughters, Alice Brown and husband John of Cedar Bluff, VA and Judy Runge and husband Charles of Marietta, GA; five grandchildren, Kemp Cunningham, Brent Cunningham, Michael Brown, Renee Brown, and Alex Runge; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral ceremony will be conducted on Sunday, September 13, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant View United Methodist Church with Dr. Ralph Kidd and Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the ceremony in the fellowship hall. A private committal service will be held at Monte Vista Burial Park where Military Honors will be provided by the Boone Dam V.F.W. Post 4933. Pallbearers will be David Cunningham, Kemp Cunningham, Brent Cunningham, John Brown, Michael Brown, Charles Runge, and Alex Runge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley Medical Clinic, 18416 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210.
