Dr. Jack D. Cole, age 90, passed on Thursday, January 11, 2024, in Raleigh, NC. Jack was the only child born to the late Frank Walter and Ada Blevins Cole. He grew up in the country near Chilhowie, VA where he enjoyed life farming, fishing, hunting, and trapping. He was a 1951 graduate of Chilhowie High School where he loved his classmates and attended their annual reunion every July, including 2023. While in high school he played the trombone in the band and was all state. He was an athlete and the first to letter in all four sports at Chilhowie High School.
Jack knew from an early age that he wanted a career in medicine. He was a graduate of Lynchburg College and the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. Before he graduated from MCV, he was a high school basketball coach, teacher, a research chemist, an instructor in graduate school, and a registered nurse at MCV Hospital.
In 1960, he began his dental career at the Southwestern Virginia State Hospital in Marion, VA. Dr. Cole entered private practice in 1961 in Glade Spring, VA and in 1970, he relocated his office to Abingdon where he practiced until his retirement in 2008. During his years of service to his wonderful patients, he was honored by being appointed to and serving on professional and charitable associations and societies which helped the people of Southwest Virginia. Dr. Cole served and held offices on the state level and practiced dentistry for 48 years.
Jack loved mankind and cherished his family, his patients, golfing friends, and the game of golf. His love of the game of golf led him to serve as president of Glenrochie Country Club for two terms. It was a labor of love for Jack that he enjoyed.
Dr. Cole rededicated his life to God at age 73 and was baptized in South Holston Lake. He tried to live by Galatians 5:22-23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
Left to cherish is memory is his wife, Joy Yontz Husinko; two sons, James Jay Cole and wife Pam, and Anthony Dean Cole and wife Cyndy; daughter, Jennifer Cole Keuls; four grandchildren, Robbie Phillips, Samuel Cole, Katie Lytton, and Amanda McCoy; five great grandchildren, Arianna, Gabriel, Raegan, Ryann, and J.B.; and beloved special friend, Tammy Edmondson.
Visitation with the family will be held 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 26, 2024, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Steven Amburgy officiating. The interment will be held in Mt. Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, VA.
