Dr. Norman Richard Dodl

Dr. Norman Richard Dodl, age 86 and formerly of Abingdon, VA, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, February 9, 2017. Norm was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was an alum of the University of Richmond, University of Virginia, and Stanford University, and a retired Professor of Education at Virginia Tech. Norm is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Ludwig Dodl and Emily McCrone Dodl.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Brenda Park Dodl; daughters, Janet Atwell and husband Chuck of Matthews, NC, and Louise Shankle and husband Eddie of Bristol, TN; son, Kenneth Dodl and wife Darla of Virginia Beach, VA; brother, Jimmy Dodl and wife Pam of WV; grandchildren, Kimberly Martin, Josh Atwell, Sarah Atwell, Amanda Erdman, Alicia Shankle, Kathryn Dodl, Claire Dodl, and Jason Dodl; and great grandchildren, Clark Erdman and Kara Erdman.

Visitation with the family will be held 10-11 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2017, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Joy LeStrange officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Chuck Atwell, Kenneth Dodl, Eddie Shankle, Brad Erdman, Jason Dodl, Josh Atwell, and Madison McCraw serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Wright, Mike Mullins, Dave Jones, Bill Hampton, Tom Puckett, Tim Smith, Chip Johnson, Earl Richards, and Gary Turner. Military Rites will be conducted by the Virginia Army National Guard.
