Dr. Richard Stephen “Steve” Fulmer, 75, passed away December 15, 2018 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Steve was born September 29, 1943 in Orlando, Florida to the late Judson Fulmer and the late Shelley Todd Fulmer DeBusk.
Steve was a graduate of Boone High School in Orlando, graduated Carson Newman University with a bachelor degree, Middle Tennessee State University with a master’s degree, Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky. with a master’s degree, Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville with a PhD in Psychology, post doctorate at the University of Oregon. Steve was a member of the faculty of the medical school at East Tennessee State University and a partner in private practice at Bristol Psychiatry and Psychology in Bristol, Tenn. He also served as a mental health evaluator for the Commonwealth of Virginia in Russell County. Steve had served on many mental health boards and taught psychology at many area colleges.
Steve attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Abingdon and loved hunting, fishing, and spending time at South Holston Lake. One of his greatest enjoyments was spending time with his grandchildren.
Steve is survived by his wife, Susan Carey Fulmer; son Stephen Judson Fulmer of Apopka, Fla.; daughters Elizabeth Fulmer Sanders and husband Jason of Greensboro, N.C., and Stefanie Saylers Hess and husband Steven of Knoxville, Tenn.; step-children, Cameron Scott Bell of Abingdon, and Hillary Lauren Hawkins and husband Brock of Abingdon; grandchildren, Cooper and John Sanders, Jackson and Lillian Bell, Abby and Alex Hawkins, and Henry Hess; special nieces, Dixie and Dawn; and special friend Dr. Jim Brasfield.
The memorial service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2018, in St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 124 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210, with Father Boyd Evans officiating. A reception will follow in the church parish hall.
