Duard Wayne Arrington

Duard Wayne Arrington, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 at his home.

He was born, March 19, 1919, in Montgomery County, Va. to the late Andrew Jackson and Nannie Sutherland Arrington. In 1928 he moved to Lodi in Washington County with his parents and siblings.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he and his wife, Polly, settled in Abingdon. Duard spent the remainder of his life happily as a farmer, dairyman, horseman, tobacco planter and story teller.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Pauline (Polly) Blevins Arrington; by two brothers, Jack Arrington and Tom (Conway) Arrington; four sisters, Leone McAmis, Buenos Cornett, Rose Dunn and Betty Hawthorne.

He is survived by two children, Penny Hite of Abingdon and Nan Harman of Alamogordo, N.M.; one grandson, Andrew (Cac) White of Los Angeles, Ca; one sister, Shirley Bordwine of Abingdon.

Duard had so many people who loved him and enjoyed his company. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to some of his closest caregivers: the wonderful, loving staff of Hospice of Southwest Virginia, Mose Hammer, Linda Mitchell, Loretta McCracken, Doug, Brenda and Jasmine Ray, Kelsey Arrington, Rocky Warren, Kathy Hutson and many more who were so giving with their time and care.

Funeral services for Mr. Arrington will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 8, 2011 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Entombment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum in Abingdon. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Military honors at the cemetery will be provided by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service from 12:00 until the service time on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy-Clinch Valley Program, 146 E. Main Street, Abingdon, VA., 623-4000; or a charity of your choice.
