Mr. Dwight Bonham Alley, age 95, of Abingdon, Va. passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2016.Mr. Alley was a native of Washington D.C. where he was born January 6, 1921, he spent his early years in Cabin John, Md. and graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School. He entered the United States Army in 1944 serving in General Pattons 3rd Army through the conclusion of WWII and the occupation of Germany. He was a master machinist practicing his art throughout his professional life at the Washington Navy Yard, Torpedo Plant, Alexandria, Va, U.S. Bureau of Standards, and the U.S. Government Printing Office. Upon retirement, he settled in Abingdon, Va. in 1976 with his wife, Ruth Crewey Alley, of sixty-four years who preceded him in death. He was a member of the Masonic Order for fifty-six years and past president of the Desert Sands Shrine Club. He was the co-designer of the Abingdon Bicentinal Coin. Mr. Alley was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church for thrity-eight years and a member of the Wesley Bible Class.Mr. Alley is survived by his sons, Tim Alley and wife, Catherine, of Bristol, Va. and James Alley and wife, Ann, of Fairfax, Va.; daughters, Alice Joplin and husband, Bob, and Susan Smith and husband, Jim, both of Clearwater, Fla.; sister, Ruth C. Beatty of Alexandrie, VA; six grandchildren: Timothy Alley of Charlotte, N.C.; Jason Alley of Bristol, Va.; Kristen Goodloe of Golden, Co.; Jeffery Alley of Columbia, Md.; Richard DeJarnette of Seattle, Wash.; and Michael DeJarnette of Viera, Fla. He is also survived by six great grandchildren.The funeral service for Mr. Dwight Bonham Alley will be conducted at 7p.m. Monday, March 7, 2016, in the Abingdon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Countiss officiating. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. in the church. The commital service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016, in Serenity Garden Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to convene at the cemetery by 9:50 a.m. Tuesday. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Wesley Bible Class of Abingdon United Methodist Church.
