Edith Foster Butler, of Glade Spring, Va., was born on December 19, 1934, to the late James William Foster, Sr. and Mary Rachel Cato Foster. She departed her earthly life Friday, January 24, 2020, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Edith was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Secretary, Sunday School Teacher and President of the Senior Missionary Society. Edith was a member of the Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Association and Sunday School Convention where she had various roles. During her later years, Edith was on the staff of the John Battle High School Cafeteria.
In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Butler; and nine siblings, Anna C. Smith; James Foster, Jr.; Lillie B. Carter; Charles Foster; Mary Glady Montgomery; Rachel Johnson; Frances Foster; Benjamin Foster and Roger Foster. Edith leaves to cherish her memory the following: Kathy L. Butler, daughter; Sasha and B.J., grandchildren; Makayla and Wesley, great grandchildren; Marie Lampkins, sister; Don Foster, Sr. and Glen Foster, Sr., brothers; Thelma L. Kelly, cousin; Fred Spencer and Tim Spencer, special friends; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Minister Gaynelle Carter Heath officiating. A committal service will follow in Foster Family Cemetery where Charles L. Coleman, James A. Deadmore, Bryant Dukes, Carmaine Foster, Andrew Groves, Ronnie Groves, and C.J. Lee will serve as pallbearers. Michael Lampkins, Fred Spencer, Tim Spencer, Edith’s nieces and nephews, and her friends at John S. Battle High School will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be held on Tuesday prior to the serve from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
