Edith Maiden Hatcher, age 100, passed away at Grace Healthcare on September 14, 2012. Edith was born in Abingdon on May 1, 1912 and was one of five daughters of Warren Aston Maiden and Susie Lucas Maiden. She graduated from William King High School and attended VI College, where in 2006 she was awarded an honorary BA Degree. For forty years, Edith worked at The Washington County National Bank. She was a faithful member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, joining the choir when she was sixteen years old and remaining an active member for the next 79 years. She was a member of the Carrie Gillespie Circle and enjoyed planning trips for the church's senior Encore group.
She was active in the Democratic Party, the American Cancer Society, Home Demonstration Club, and the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She loved playing bridge and tending her flowers. Edith was a wonderful cook, often taking a pan of homemade rolls to families who had suffered a loss. In 2007, the Abingdon Town Council honored Edith with a resolution for being the oldest living Abingdon-born resident. In May 2012, she was again honored by the Town Council, who designated May 1, 2012 as Edith Hatcher Day.
She was a devoted mother and loved her family above all else. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Edgar Claude Hatcher, and by her sisters, Evelyn Sanders, Virginia Croxton, Margaret Wilkinson, Susie Ketron, and Katherine Fink.
Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, William A. Hatcher and wife Robin of Abingdon; and Dr. Edgar C. Hatcher, Jr. and wife Jo Ann, of Bristol, TN; her daughter, Doris Hatcher Tyler and husband, Mickey of Abingdon; one grandson, Christopher Hatcher of Alexandria, VA, and granddaughters Caitlin Hatcher of Johnson City, TN; Patricia Argabrite and husband Bill of Kingsport, TN; Sharon Hatcher of Bristol, TN; Dr. Janet Rice and husband John of Bristol, TN; and many nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon. Funeral services for Edith Mae Maiden Hatcher will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 17, 2012 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church with the Reverend Sherry Boles officiating. Burial will follow in Holston Conference United Methodist Cemetery at Emory, VA. Pallbearers will be Jason Harris, Eddie Jonas, Frank Blair, Jack Blevins, Carson Jackson, Jimmy Anderson, John Mowery, and Wes Argabrite. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Abingdon United Methodist Church Choir and the Carrie Gillespie Circle, Dr. William Baker, Dr. Ellison Conrad, Bobby Griffin and C.B. Hale.
Flowers will be appreciated, and donations in her memory may be made to the Abingdon United Methodist Church Sanctuary Choir Fund, 101 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA, or to a charity of one's choice.
