Abingdon, VAEdna Gladys Snead passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Gladys was proud to have been born in Greendale, Va. She was full of life and was always looking for new adventures. With the onset of WWII, she and a few friends travelled to Detroit, Michigan, where she became employed by Ford Motor Company. At Ford, she assisted in the manufacture of the WWII era B-17 bombers. Gladys loved the Church; she was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and later, Abingdon United Methodist Church. She worked closely with her husband, Sam Snead, and together, they operated Sam Snead Electric. They also held several commercial rental properties in the Abingdon area. Gladys loved golf and was very proud of her hole-in-one trophy that she received in the 1960s. She was very outgoing and had numerous friends in the Glenrochie Ladies Golf Association and the Abingdon Garden Club, of which she was past president. She was a lifetime member of the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was also a member of the Abingdon Book Lovers Club.Gladys was predeceased by her husband Samuel Snead; her parents James and Virgie Davenport White; and grandson Samuel W. Snead, II. She is survived by her son Sam W. Snead and wife Rebecca of Bristol, Va.; granddaughter Meghan Shaffer and husband Scott of Bristol, Tenn.; niece Pamela Bashor and her late husband David of Charlotte, N.C.; and great-niece Melissa Ellington, her husband Doug, and two great-great-nephews Devin and Bashor, all of Charlotte, N.C.A funeral service for Edna Gladys Snead will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 29, 2015 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. Laura Plaster and Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens where Allen Hearl, Jeff Grubb, Scott Shaffer, Randy Eads, Sr., Gary Dutton and Roy Hull will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home prior to the service.Gladys relished life to the fullest and she was always looking ahead for new things. She loved learning and meeting new people. She will be greatly missed by her family and all of those who knew her. She will be remembered by her effervescent smile, positive attitude and humor.
