Elbert Lincoln Umberger, age 88, passed on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Elbert was born and raised in the Crockett and Wytheville Virginia area and is the last of seven children in his family. As a young man, Elbert moved to the Abingdon, VA area to work for Carter Bros. Trucking.

Mr. Umberger also worked at Westinghouse, was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church, Past President of the local Democratic Party and was a 32nd Degree Mason in which was a member of Abingdon Lodge #48 and was also a member of York Lodge # 12. He is preceded in death by his parents, Stewart and Molly Ingo Umberger and two brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris Bowman Umberger; three brothers-in-law, Pete Bowman of Jonesborough, TN, Mack Bowman of Watkinsville, GA and George Bowman of Powell, TN; two sisters-in-law, Betty Hurd of Knoxville, TN and Ruth Collier of Kingsport, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 P.M. Friday, September 28, 2012 in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Dr. Steven W. Pollard officiating. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Abingdon Lodge # 48.

Visitation with the family will be held from 2:00-3:30 P.M. Friday just prior to the service in the mausoleum. Those wishing to express sympathy online may do so by visiting www.farrisfuneralservice.com and signing the online guest register.
