Mr. Elgin Summers Pierce, 92, passed away on Thursday April 18, 2013 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Hayters Gap Community of Washington County Virginia. He worked as an iron worker in the construction industry where he was a master welder and foreman. Mr. Pierce graduated from Meadowview High School where he proudly played football during his years there. Elgin served his country in the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was a Charter Member of the Abingdon Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents George Pierce and Rosa Hurley; his first wife of 37 years Minnie Helton Pierce, and his second wife of 30 years Nellie Widener Pierce, brothers George, Charlie, Dale, Henry, Durwood and Garland Pierce; and sister Dessie Pierce Stallard.

Survivors include daughter Sue Rowell of Gainesville, VA; sons Thomas E (Betsy) of Charlotte, NC, Ronald P. (Geraldine) of Raeford, NC; and Roger L. (Donetta) of Elizabethtown, KY; grandchildren Lisa Rowell, Debra Frank, Stephanie Akers, Marissa Pierce and Jason Pierce and 6 great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral Services for Mr. Elgin Summers Pierce will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday April 21, 2013 in the Farris Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Bill Haywood Officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, where the Highlands Honor Guard will perform graveside services. The family will receive friends at the Farris Funeral Service Chapel from 6 - 8 pm Saturday. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to the Abingdon Church of Christ, 19508 Dennison Dr.; Abingdon, VA 24211 or to a favorite charity.
