Elizabeth Mae “Betty” Young, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on March 10, 2018, at the Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, Va. She was born on February 20, 1937, in Bristol, Va. to the late Neil Ferguson Young and Elizabeth (Crowgey) Young.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Elizabeth “Beth” Poff; son-in-law, James Norman Poff; and by her sister, Barbara Young Huff. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Robert Huff.
She attended Virginia Western Community College and the University of Michigan. For many years she was a Computer Systems Engineer for Virginia Western Community College and the Virginia Community College System serving 23 community colleges throughout the state.
She was a devoted Green Bay Packers fan and owner. A great lover of cats, she volunteered for Siamese Cat Rescue helping to relay hundreds of rescued cats to new homes across the country. She was proud of being a regular blood donor for the Red Cross. She was passionate about the environment and a lifetime member of the Sierra Club. She loved books, movies, and ice cream.
A quiet, gentle woman of great integrity, Betty will be missed by her many cousins and good friends especially Pam Roane, and her cats Rosalynn, Romulus Mohan, and Butter.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Holston Conference Cemetery in Emory, Va.
