Elizabeth Crowgey Young, 103, passed away at The Hermitage in Roanoke, Va., on Wednesday, October 4, 2017.
Elizabeth was born in Emory, Va. She attended Emory and Henry College and received an A.B. degree in History. Elizabeth later received a M.A. degree in Education from East Carolina University. After several years of teaching, she qualified as a children’s librarian and finished her career at North Hialeah Elementary School in Miami-Dade County, Fla.
Following the death of her husband, Elizabeth gave many hours as a volunteer in the Special Services Unit at the Virginia Veteran’s Care Center in Roanoke, Va.
Survivors include her daughters, Elizabeth M. Young and Barbara Y. Huff; and her granddaughter, Beth S. Poff and her husband, James-Norman Poff. She also leaves many much-loved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends; and her cat, Buttercup.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Neil F. “Jack” Young; her parents, Elizabeth Akers Crowgey and Henry Lawrence Crowgey; her brothers, Henry G. Crowgey and sister-in-law Margie Crowgey, John Reginald Crowgey and sister-in-law Rita H. Crowgey, and Charles Frederick Crowgey and sister-in-law Dorothy French Crowgey; and her sister, Rosalind Campbell and brother-in-law Boyd C. Campbell.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, October 22, 2017, in the Holston Conference Cemetery in Emory, Va. A reception will follow in the Tobias Smyth Cabin on the campus of Emory and Henry College.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Crowgey Family Scholarship, P.O. Box 950, Emory and Henry College, Emory, VA 24327; or to the Alzheimer’s Association; or to a charity of choice.
