Elizabeth Darlene Szczesny

Abingdon, VA - Elizabeth Darlene (née Campbell) Szczesny, age 82, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept 4, 2023, in Abingdon, Virginia. She was born on December 15, 1940, in Saltville, VA. She is proceeded in death by her adoptive grandparents, Charles Maiden St. John and Elizabeth Lee (née Lamkin) St. John, and her parents, Lewis Warren Campbell and Emily Virginia (née St. John) Blevins. 

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Joseph Stanley Szczesny, three sons, Joseph Michael Szczesny and wife Bethany, Joseph Bronislaw Szczesny and wife Marilou, and Joseph Charles Maiden Szczesny and wife Vasiliki; and by grandchildren, Tony Szczesny and wife Rachel, Darlene Viera and husband Luis, Robert Szczesny and wife Nichole, Brooke Morella Szczesny, Maria Elizabeth Szczesny and Joseph Constantine Szczesny; two sisters, Linda Dorsey and husband Bob, and Deborah Acox and husband Jerry; brother, Wayne Campbell and wife Rosemary; and several dearly loved great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. 

Liz and Joe met in Washington, D.C., while she was employed as a typist for the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover, and Joe was a radioman serving in the U.S. Navy. She was a southern belle from southwestern Virginia, and he was a city slicker from Long Island, Queens, New York. Together they proved that opposites really do attract. They quickly fell deeply in love, and from that moment forward they were inseparable. Together, they built a beautiful life together with their three sons, all of whom Liz decided to name Joseph because, as she told it, she loved all of them equally as much as her husband. 

Keeping with Elizabeth’s wishes, her remains have been cremated and the family will host a Celebration of Life on a date that has not yet been determined, but which will likely be held in late November.
