Mrs. Ellamae Ryburn Dowdy, age 92, died Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the home of her niece, Katherine Ryburn Pitt, in Powhatan, VA with whom she had made her home for the past 3 years. She had previously resided in Lynchburg, VA
She was a graduate of William and Mary College and received her nursing degree from Lynchburg General Hospital School of Nursing.
During World War II, Mrs. Dowdy was a surgical nurse, and retired as a military nurse from March Air Base in Riverside, California. She was a member of the Lynchburg Church of the Nazarene in Lynchburg, VA.
Survivors include 2 nieces: Katherine Ryburn Pitt, Powhatan, VA and Jessika J. Poole, Greenville, SC; 3 nephews: Charles A. Ryburn, III, Pensacola, FL, Thomas E. Jenks, III, Lexington, VA and Tim C. Jenks, Chattanooga, TN
Graveside services will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Old Glade Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Dr. Jack Garland officiating.
The family suggests memorial contributions to LGH School of Nursing Alumni Association, 1901 Tate Springs Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24501-1167 or flowers may be sent for the service in care of Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, VA.
