Ellen Baker Carter

August 18, 1941 — June 13, 2013

Ellen Baker Carter, the daughter of the late Lloyd and Ethel Baker, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2013 in Nashville, TN. She was born in Abingdon, VA on August 18, 1941. She finished Douglas High School in Bristol, VA, and attended Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon, VA. She was the mother of Russell, Lloyd Franklin, and Dr. Tracey Carter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd and Melvin Baker; and one sister, Doris Baker.

She taught Head Start at Benhams, after which she was one of the first teachers to teach at the Abingdon Day Care. She then worked at Virginia Intermont College. When she first went to Virginia Intermont College, she worked in the Financial Aid Office, and later continued to work at the college as the Circulation Assistant in the Library, which was her last job.

She was a member of Mt. Calvary Community Church in Glade Spring, VA, where she was one of the prayer warriors. She was a faithful member at Mt. Calvary and was affiliated with Mt. Zion Baptist Church (Antioch location) upon relocating to Antioch, TN in 2012.

She leaves to cherish her memories her three loving children; a special aunt, Katherine Baker; a host of cousins; her closest friends, Connie Daggs, Lemuel Wheeler, Van Wheeler, George Bell III, Calvin Hunt, and Joseph Perry; and her church family at Mt. Calvary Community Church, which church she loved very much.

Visitation and viewing will be from 12:00-1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Reverend Melvin Johnson officiating. A committal service will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
