Mrs. Ethel Baker Smith, 91, heard her Lord and Savior whisper sweet Peace to her on Friday, January 22, 2010, "my child come home."
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, VA and was a member of First Baptist Church, Meadowview, VA. She attended the Valley Street Baptist Church until her health failed her. She loved cooking and was a great caretaker to both of her husbands. Ethel was a former Board member of the Housing Authority and Abingdon Day Care.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lloyd Baker, Jr. and Olen Smith, a daughter, Doris Baker, two sons, Melvin Baker and Lloyd Baker, III.
She is survived by a daughter, Ellen Carter, Abingdon,VA, three grandchildren, Russell Carter, Lloyd Franklin Carter and Dr. Tracey Carter, special nieces, Hattie Daniels, Jane Carter and other nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a step-daughter, Pat Smith and one sister-in-law, Viola Daniels.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Reverend Melvin Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, nephews and George Pope.
Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Smith to the Mt. Calvary Community Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 251, Glade Spring, VA 24340.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 27, 2010 from noon until 1:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Home.
