Eugene “Gene” Compton, age 84, of Abingdon and formerly of Woodbridge and Fredericksburg, Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at his home. He was born January 4, 1938, to Sylvia Compton in Davenport, Va. Gene was employed for 27 years as a plumber at Arlington National Cemetery. The family relocated to Abingdon in 2006 and became members of Abingdon Baptist Church. Gene was a family man who will be remembered for his kindness, and he never met a stranger.
In addition to his mother, Gene was also preceded in death by a brother and a sister; a daughter-in-law, Michelle Compton; and a grandson, Colin Clark.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Anne Harris Compton; daughter, Marlene Clark and husband, Clayton, of Florida; son, Kevin Compton of the home; five grandchildren, Karin Musa, Chalynne Clark, Cherisea Clark, Calleyanne Clark, and Adam Compton; two great grandchildren, Cassandra Compton and Cynara Clark.
A funeral ceremony will be held on Monday, August 8, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Bill Bryan officiating. A committal service will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held on Monday from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
